5 College Majors That Are Perfect for Foodies

Love food so much you want to study it in college? There are a lot of options beyond cooking! Take a look at these five great academic fields for foodies.

Whether you’re the type who goes for a classic juicy burger or an experimentalist who tries anything once, we all have a go-to meal. Personally, I enjoy a nice corn on the cob with rich butter, cotija cheese, and a dash of paprika; it makes me salivate at the thought of it. As students prepare for college, jobs, and new adventures, food remains a constant in our lives—so why not make a career of it too? If you’ve ever wondered why we have certain reactions to food, why we like certain foods more than others, or what molecular compounds swirl together to make odd food combinations make sense, you may want to consider one of the following majors that are perfect for foodies.

1. Food Science

If cooking and inventing new recipes is your passion, majoring in Food Science may be the right choice for you. A plethora of schools offer this major, the top-ranked being Cornell University, which offers both undergraduate and master’s programs. Within this field, you’ll develop your knowledge of both chemical and physical aspects of food from beginning to end. Food Science majors take courses related to agriculture, dietetics, and plant taxonomy to complement their concentration. Many students go on to become chefs or farmers and even work in laboratories for research and development.

2. Food Business and Management

If you have a passion for food but lack the tactical skills to whip up a Michelin-star dish, fear not—you can still be involved in the process of food production. With a Food Business or Management major, you’ll learn a little bit about everything that’s involved in the business of good eats. Personally, I find the marketing side to sound pretty cool; you could develop the next McDonald’s campaign or learn why certain colors spark an appetite. In terms of curriculum, this major dabbles in a bit of everything from economics to biology. Considering there will always be a demand for food, pursuing Food Business or Management will always be reliable workwise.

3. Biotechnology

Biotechnology usually refers to the medical field; however many students who choose this major can focus on Agriculture as a specialty. Biotech majors often use their knowledge to understand food at microscopic levels. This includes understanding how the body processes food and uses that nourishment to power our cells. Many students begin their education with general biological science classes and work their way up to specializing in Animal or Microbial Biotechnology Systems. This major is very diverse, as degree holders can take jobs in everything from food production to drug development.

4. Nutrition

Though it seems like a given for a foodie to pursue Nutrition, it’s the best of both worlds for students who also want to learn about human health. Nutrition majors take multiple science classes and may even complete a pre-professional experience such as shadowing or volunteer work. Once you’ve secured your title of Registered Dietician Nutritionist after passing an exam, you could pursue further education to become a specialist in specific areas. You’ll also have a variety of workplaces to choose from, including hospital settings, schools, athletic offices, and more.

5. Agriculture

Agriculture is an incredible major that is skyrocketing in popularity due to climate change and sustainability. Students in this program learn about the practice of cultivating natural resources as well as the global economy and the impact basic goods have on it. Choosing this major will also make you a more worldly individual, as you must factor in global events and how they impact foods that are imported across the world. As of late, the United Nations urges global governments to take more substantial actions in order to prevent the next food crisis. The world has already seen food shortages as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian-Ukraine war, and shipping delays across the globe. Bet you didn’t know studying Agriculture could be this exciting!

My high school counselor introduced me to CollegeXpress freshman year. It has made such a difference in high school, and I plan to continue relying on it in college. CollegeXpress is my go-to because it addresses each aspect of being a student. There are the articles you’d expect regarding college applications and financial aid, but you will also find advice on things like de-stressing and maintaining relationships while balancing a heavy course load. CollegeXpress will also keep you updated on current scholarships through e-mails each Saturday. (They don’t harass you with any product promotion like so many other sites do.) CollegeXpress is a lot like an older sibling who has already conquered the challenges you are facing. Now, they are reaching out a helpful hand. I say take it.

CollegeXpress helped me by providing me with many scholarship opportunities and information about universities I want to attend. What I love about CollgeXpress is how it provides a variety of information, and as the first child attending a university next year, it has been very essential and helpful. I’m so grateful for this because the information provided by CollegeXpress has also helped me see that there are so many college opportunities, and it always informs me by email. In other words, CollegeXpress has been like a guide for me as a future college student.

It's an honor for me to be writing to share a little about my experience with CollegeXpress. I've been using CollegeXpress for about a year now, and the reason why I chose it is because it provides astonishing scholarships for every student around the globe. Besides that, this organization dispenses all the information necessary to help students get to college. CollegeXpress has helped me have an easier experience with applying to colleges and choosing the best fit for myself.

CollegeXpress helped open me up to many colleges that fit my interests. I’m only a sophomore in high school, so I like having a lot to look at, and CX does a great job of picking colleges that meet my wants. It's a great website that I'll continue to use until it comes time for me to apply for colleges. I also like that it notifies me through email with options to look at. Thanks CX!

For the entire year before college, I spent a lot of time deeply considering what major I wanted to go into and how to fund my higher education. After a lot of research, I came across CollegeXpress, which helped me ultimately find a ton of scholarships for which I could apply—and some of which I received! If it weren’t for CollegeXpress, I may not have found those scholarships as they didn't appear on any other scholarship search forum. Additionally, I learned more about the options I had been considering for my major through CollegeXpress’s resources. In the end, I chose to major in Computer Science, as it seemed best suited to me and the careers in the field seemed enjoyable, and I've never been more excited to move into my future! Ultimately, I want to thank CollegeXpress for offering their services. I received enough financial aid in scholarships to fund my entire freshman year of college and even got some money refunded which I used to purchase a new laptop, and I bought all of the books I needed for the semester!
